 Reflections and Updates from the Author


Some time has passed since my last addition to this Blog. The weather has been challenging, from excessive drought to snow covered roads. Despite the weather, and other challenges posed by age and retirement, I will soon be working on new topics. This will also include re-arranging the Blog to be more user friendly. I hope to begin moving the postings on Williams, Arizona to their own Blog. This should renew interest in exploring the remarkable town of Williams. 

Without much further ado, I will soon be off to a trip to New Mexico, exploring more tidbits of history from the Civil War to Billy the Kid. Maybe a stop in Roswell will get the creative mind in gear. There is also a remarkable town called Silver City, that once had a narrow gauge (?) railroad. Good times lay ahead.

Satellite imaging shows the grade crossing Cougar Park, then entering Hell Canyon. This entire region is rugged, steep and challenging to traverse. Evidence indicates, from the numerous stump fields, that a centrally located spur might have existed in the Canyon.      Recent research, conducted in the field, and in the climate controlled archives at the Cline Library, NAU, have offered evidence that challenges my earlier view that a line existed within the confines of the canyon.     Field research, Forest Service maps, and satellite imaging confirms that a line did exist to the mouth of the Hell Canyon; it is a speculation as to how far it penetrated the area. BARNEY FLATS AREA; SAGINAW SOUTHERN; CONNECTIONS WITH BIG SPRING CANYON, COUGAR PARK/HELL CANYON, MC CANYON/ELK RIDGE LINES

  BARNEY FLATS COPYRIGHT; ALL RIGHTS RESERVED (5/10/22)     The Saginaw Southern Railroad, part of the Saginaw lumber Company, ran due south from Williams, Arizona. Started in 1898, the road wound its way through the rich timber stands, and at the far end eventually passed Davenport Tank, before reaching an abrupt end of the line a few miles to the south. Along the way the line crossed a beautiful and scenic area, known as Barney Flats. The company was not in the business of selling scenery, but had a keen interest in Ponderosa Pine. The surrounding area near the Flats was rich in timber, waiting for the touch of the crosscut saw. Whether it was by design or coincidence, this geographic location proved central to the number of  spurs winding their way into the woods.      Barney Flats doesn't appear to be the site of a logging headquarters camp.
