I have noticed an uptick in the number of viewers of this blog. First, thank you for your interest- please let others know. This blog is not about my personal interests, such as whom I was last seen hanging out with. If that is how you wish to invest your time, by all means exercise that important right of free speech. Keep in mind that we will soon be celebrating Veterans Day; many a soldier, sailor or pilot risked their lives or paid the ultimate price for your freedom. Maybe say thanks to someone who served, or visit a National Cemetary; bow your head, giving thanks for what they did for you. It's a humbling experience; live your life with respect and thankfulness; invest your days wisely. Old age comes all too quickly. 

This blog is about an important slice of history. I am thankful for the fact that I can post information that might otherwise not be seen or understood. What is also so wonderful about this country is that we will soon be celebrating another holiday- Thanksgiving. So much opportunity to stop and give thanks, appreciate something done by past generations that make our current lives so full of blessings. Most people in the world spend their days trying to meet their basic needs; we have so much opportunity to satisfy our wants. Times are hard, but we still have running water, transportation and an abundance of food. That said, maybe give back some of your time by volunteering to help those in need; pack food boxes, help at a shelter. Who you're hanging out with becomes less important, when you are at a shelter serving food to people who just want a warm meal, a place to stay, and a shower. If we get our minds off of our own circumstances and bless someone else in a constructive way, then maybe we can start solving a whole lot of problems. Be part of the solution- whatever happened to the Peace Corps?

Ramblings of an old man; then again, I earned this moment to share wisdom with other generations. 

Please post this blog on other sources that are interested in local history. I am not the most internet savvy, but then again, I figured out how to do this. And don't forget to be thankful. God bless America.

Satellite imaging shows the grade crossing Cougar Park, then entering Hell Canyon. This entire region is rugged, steep and challenging to traverse. Evidence indicates, from the numerous stump fields, that a centrally located spur might have existed in the Canyon.      Recent research, conducted in the field, and in the climate controlled archives at the Cline Library, NAU, have offered evidence that challenges my earlier view that a line existed within the confines of the canyon.     Field research, Forest Service maps, and satellite imaging confirms that a line did exist to the mouth of the Hell Canyon; it is a speculation as to how far it penetrated the area. Stump fields exist that tell a story of early logging methods, so some harvesting at an early date did take place.

    SAGINAW AND MANISTEE FLAGSTAFF OPERATIONS: 1941-1952   On March 1, 1941, the Saginaw and Manistee leased the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company from manager Joe Dolan. The S&M had acquired vast timber holdings in the area of Mormon Lake; the lease of the AL&T allowed them to harvest these holdings.      The Saginaw extended the Howard Spring line an additional 14 miles to Allan Lake, located South of Mormon Lake.  The Allen Lake Line was essentially a steam engine powered, reasonably straight conveyor belt to and from the mill. With the exception of several short spurs and a "Y" near the southern end, the line was fed by trucks.   Mechanized logging had replaced the need to constantly relay spurs into the forest. A steady flow of quality timber was provided to the leased Flagstaff mill, and during WWII made a significant contribution to the war effort.     In October of 1944 the Saginaw and Manistee purchased its' first and only 2-6-6-2 articulated mallet locom
