LATEST FINDS AND COMMENTARIES

In 1923, The Saginaw and Manistee Lumber Company established A Safety Committee for the company, including the mill operations and logging camps. The committee was comprised of representatives from management and employees from a diverse group of ethnic backgrounds, and various crafts.

One of the benefits of this committee was the monthly publication of a newsletter, that was distributed to all of the employees and prominently displayed at the various worksites. This publication was entitled "The Lumberjack," published by the Safety and Welfare Committee of the Saginaw and Manistee Lumber Company, Williams, Arizona. Very few of these publications now exist, with only one existing in bit and pieces, having been photocopied. This newsletter continued for some time, possibly to the end of operations in 1941. They contain a wealth of information on the monthly operations of the company and all of the related woods operations. Finding these documents would be a major step forward in understanding the history of the Saginaw, as seen from the employee's perspective.

Recently, I was blessed with finding an original, the very first issue: May 1923, Volume 1, Number 1.

I will be posting new information, and as time allows, updating and revising prior postings. If you have any of these documents, please email me; I would like to use them for research and eventually donate the collection to a suitably safe and trusted repository.
